What Rekeying Is — And Why It’s Often The Right First Step
This will cause the old key to cease functioning and allow only the new key to work the lock. The door hardware remains in place; only the internal keying is changed.
Because rekeying preserves functioning hardware, it is usually quicker and less expensive than replacing the entire lock when the lock itself is in good condition.
When To Choose Rekeying Vs. Lock Replacement
How Rekeying Works — Step-By-Step
- Inspection: We check the condition of the cylinder, strike plate, and quantities of locks to be serviced in order to confirm rekeying is appropriate.
- Cylinder removal (if required): the cylinder or lock core is removed from the door and placed on a bench or in a mobile keying rig.
- Pin change: the old pins are removed and replaced with new pin combinations matched to your new key.
- Reinstallation & test: the cylinder is reinstalled, and every new key is tested in the door to verify smooth operation and proper security.
- Documentation: for residential jobs, we provide a concise job receipt and can record key counts or keying notes if requested.

Timing & Typical Expectations
Rekeying is fast when performed by a trained locksmith.
In most standard Houston residential cases, a professional can rekey a single cylinder in approximately 5–10 minutes.
Larger whole-home jobs scale by the number of cylinders and access complexity.
For planning purposes, expect most single-lock rekeys to be completed in under an hour on-site when access is straightforward.
Cost Guidance
Costs vary by cylinder type, travel distance, time of service (after-hours and emergency calls are higher), and whether you require multiple keys or keyed-alike sets.
Typical ranges for residential rekey jobs are between roughly $200 and $300, depending on complexity. Emergency or after-hours rekeying and high-security cylinders are priced higher.
For an accurate quote, we will evaluate your specific hardware types & counts, as well as your security goals.
Security Implications & Benefits Of Rekeying
-
Immediate denial of access to prior keyholders: after rekeying, lost or unreturned keys no longer open the door.
-
Cost effectiveness: rekeying avoids the hardware cost and installation time of full replacement while achieving the intended security outcome.
-
Flexibility: we can key multiple locks alike (one key for multiple doors) or create simple master setups for landlords and homeowners.
-
Minimal disruption: rekeying is non-destructive and typically quicker than replacement, making it ideal for occupied homes.
When Rekeying Is Not Sufficient
If a lock shows advanced wear, has been tampered with, or is a low-quality unit prone to failure, replacement is the safer option.
Similarly, if you want smart lock features, remote access, or higher ANSI security ratings, we recommend a hardware upgrade rather than rekeying.
Our technician will advise and show you comparative options on-site.
Why Use A Professional Locksmith (Not DIY Rekey Kits)
DIY rekey kits can work for very simple consumer-grade cylinders, but they require patience, the correct key blanks, and proper technique.
Professional locksmiths bring training, experience, and a range of key blanks and pinning kits that cover most brands and keyways. They also perform verification and testing that reduces the chance of lockout or malfunction.
For speed, warranty coverage, and consistent results, we recommend professional residential rekey service.

What is “rekeying” a lock?
Rekeying is the process of changing the internal pins of a lock cylinder so the existing key no longer operates it, and a new key is required. The exterior hardware remains in place; only the lock’s internal keying changes.
This is usually faster and less expensive than full lock replacement when the hardware itself is sound.
When should I rekey instead of replacing the lock?
Rekey when the lock hardware functions properly and you want to deny access to previous keyholders (move-ins, tenant turnover, lost keys, relationship changes).
Replace the lock if it is mechanically damaged, corroded, worn, has been tampered with, or if you require upgraded security features (ANSI Grade 1 & 2 hardware, smart locks, or higher security cylinders).
Rekeying preserves existing hardware; replacement upgrades or replaces it.
How long does a residential rekey take?
A single residential cylinder rekey typically takes a trained locksmith about 10–15 minutes to rekey on site, depending on the complexity of the hardware and specific door setup.
Whole-home jobs scale by the number of cylinders and access complexity; a multi-door job may take a few hours.
Guardian Safe & Lock attempts to provide accurate time estimates at the time of quoting specific job sites.
If I’ve lost a key, is rekeying enough — or should I replace the locks?
If a key is lost or stolen, rekeying the affected cylinders is generally sufficient to deny access to anyone who might have that key.
Replace the lock only if the hardware is compromised, damaged, or if you want to upgrade to higher security (or smart) hardware.
For high-risk situations (break-ins, repeated tampering), replacement plus a security audit is advisable.
How often should I rekey my home’s locks?
There is no fixed schedule for every household.
Common practice is to rekey after ownership/occupancy changes, when keys go missing, or when access control is otherwise uncertain. Some homeowners choose proactive rekeying every few years (commonly suggested intervals are every 3–5 years) as part of routine security maintenance.
We make recommendations based on your property, tenancy, and security posture.
